Replace the word ‘said’ in your writing

Replace said in your writing speech bubbles

When writing dialogue, many writers tend to use the word ‘said’ far too much. There are many other words you can use to replace ‘said’, and at the same time bring across the feelings of your characters, such as in this example:

“What a mess!” she said.

or

“What a mess!” she groaned.

The word ‘groaned’ shares the frustration of the character, or maybe even despair. Not only that, as you read the sentence, you also hear how the words are spoken.

Below is a list of words you can use to replace ‘said’.
(Please always consult a dictionary if you don’t know the full meaning of a word!)
